Kotiluoto offers excellent recreational opportunities for waterfarers. Enjoy a snack at the resting area, stroll along the embankment path, catch your breath on the cliffs, and enjoy a wood-burning sauna. In addition to birdwatching, visitors can spot massive erratic boulders left behind by the Ice Age thousands of years ago. Equally sturdy is the island’s century-old stone villa, which is now a protected site leased for private use by boating associations. Traces of the villa’s once-grand garden can still be seen in the terrain—a prime example of the lush gardens that once graced archipelago villas. Beside hikers, the old garden is also a favorite haunt for bats.
You are allowed to make a fire in the campfire sites when a wildfire warning is not in place.
Short-term camping (a couple of nights) in the wild is permitted under the right of public access.
Dogs and other pets must be kept on a leash.

The villa and its grounds are in private use, but otherwise, visitors are free to explore the island of Kotiluoto. The island features a cooking shelter, a dry toilet, and a small self-service sauna, which will open to the public in July 2026. Sauna sessions can be booked through this page; reservations will open in late June.
Kotiluoto is accessible via a connecting ferry service during the summer (June–August).
Boaters can use the mooring rings located on the western shore. Note: Mooring at the ferry pier or the private piers on the eastern shore is strictly prohibited. The northern shore offers the most suitable spots for landing.
Kotiluoto is a valuable bird nesting site. It is crucial to remain quiet and avoid disturbing the environment during the nesting season (April 1st – August 15th). Please pass nests calmly and keep a respectful distance.
There is no waste management on the island; visitors are required to take all trash back to the mainland for recycling.
Accessibility
The terrain on Kotiluoto is difficult to navigate, and there are no accessible services on the island.
Additional Information
Together with the neighboring Villaluodot islands, Kotiluoto forms a beautiful outdoor recreation area in the East Helsinki archipelago. Other nearby islands include Kivisaari, Malkasaari, Läntinen Neitsytsaari, Kalliosaari, and Pikku Leikosaari.
