Destination information

Palakoski is not far away from Helsinki and it is relatively easy to find. It is situated 9 kilometres from Veikkola, the last 5 kilometres of which is a gravel road. There is an information board and dry toilet in the parking area.

The best way to explore the area is to follow the Palakoski trail. It guides hikers over three scenic hilltop cliffs, along the lush Palokoski Rapids and Palojärvi lakeside. The trail is a 4.3-km circular route marked with orange, and it starts and finishes at a car park. The Palakoski trail is a demanding route (Vaativa reitti), which follows a narrow, in places uneven, rocky forest path. The route includes steep gradients. The rocks are slippery in wet conditions. Hikers may choose to walk up the steps to the lookout on the Mummusali cliff, which is signposted along Palakoski trail.

A direct route to the Mummusali cliff is also signposted from the car park. The route is 1 km long and marked with pink. The lookout offers a scenic view over Palojoki River valley into the evening sun. The route is of medium difficulty (Keskivaativa reitti); after the road section at the start, the forest path is narrow and uneven and rocky in places. The route includes some gradient changes but no steep ascents or descents. Visitors may choose to walk down the steep hillside and steps to admire Palokoski Rapids flowing at the foot of the cliff.

There are old hanger plates on the Mummusali cliff. Uuvi doesn’t know the history, age or condition of the hanger plates and cannot recommend the use of them.

The parking area and road are maintained during winter time.

Accessibility

There are no unobstructed services in the area. Palakoski is very hilly and the trails are narrow, with lots of exposed roots and stones.
